View Full Version : Multiple Last Names

September 23rd, 2005, 10:04 PM
Hi,
First, congratulations for the good work , thanks for keepeing it free.

I live in Argentina where it is very common to have 2 last names, like:
Name: Roberto
Last Name: Perez Moreno

I use outlook 03 , and I input the contact using the "full name" button, like:
First: Roberto
Middle: (nothing)
Last: Perez Moreno

Outlook will correctly interpret this, and identify the name as "Roberto Perez Moreno" , and file it as : Perez Moreno, Roberto.

BUT , after syncing with Plaxo
Plaxo will assume that Perez is a middle name , and will identify the contact as "Moreno, Roberto Perez". Which is very anoying when I want to search for a contact, since I search the letter P , but it is actually incorrectly filed under M

Is this a bug , or WAD (working as design)... looks like a bug to me.

Anyway to fix it ?

Thanks!
Gonzalo

I have a similar sort of problem. Any of my contacts in Outlook who have a suffix to their name are listed in Plaxo by their suffix first, instead of their surname. Is there a way around this? Thanks.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks

Well this is a known issue that is being looked into, but I don't think there currently is a good solution here. Eventually I believe we'd like to sync the individual names from Outlook, and then this problem shouldn't occur.

I have the same problem with the multipe last names.
Under Thunderbird there is a field for the last name and a field for the first name. Is there no way to sync the last name field with the Plaxo online field for last name?
How can i correct this online? In the online Plaxo Page 'my contacts' is just one field for the complete Name...
Thanks,
Michael

Arg, now Plaxo kills the first part of the last name!!!
Example (Thanks gonza123):
Name: Roberto
Last Name: Perez Moreno
In Plexo Online (and with this also in OL and Thunderbird):
Moreno, Roberto
No sign of "Perez"!!
I'm nearly to kill Plaxo from all computers!

Just to explain the problem in a bit more detail:

Outlook has field names for Firstname, Middle name, and Lastname.
Plaxo Online only has a field for Name.
Tbird has fields for First and Last (I believe).

Case #1: When you create an entry in Outlook, where:
Firstname: Roberto
Middle: <blank>
Lastname: Perez Moreno

This will create an entry on Plaxo Online with the Name: Roberto Perez Moreno. Plaxo should continue to maintain the proper mapping of the name to the correct Outlook fields.

Case #2: if you create an entry on Plaxo Online with the Name: Roberto Perez Moreno, once this entry is sync'd down to your Outlook, the fields are mapped as follows:

Firstname: Roberto
Middle: Perez
Lastname: Moreno

Case #3: if you create an entry on Plaxo Online with the Name: Roberto Perez Moreno, once this entry is sync'd down to your TBird, the fields are mapped as follows:

Firstname: Roberto
Lastname: Moreno

(the full information exists within Plaxo Online, but the "middle" name is not presented on TBird since there is no "middle" name field.

Case #4: if you create an entry on TBird, where:

Firstname: Roberto
Lastname: Perez Moreno

this will create an entry on Plaxo Online, where the Name is: Roberto Perez Moreno.

So basically, because of the differences in supported fields across various applications and that "spaces" are generally treated as field deliminators, it is difficult to always assume the proper format. Plaxo makes it's best guess, based on where the data originates. The data is not lost, but depending on what fields can be presented in the local email application, the presentation may not as expected.

As Bryan mentioned, we don't have a good solution at this time that generically works across all applications.

I am one of the people who have multiple last names in the address book. Does plaxo have a plan have plane in changing their field for "name" into first name, middle and last name? I am really looking forward for this feature. I also suggest that the plaxo toolbar have the ability to show first what will be updated in both Plaxo Online and Outlook like the "Intellisync for Yahoo".

Yes, our next big release should have quite a bit more international support, including better handling of names (specifically the multiple last name issue), addresses, etc.

Yeah, the address handling in Plaxo needs major improvement. One of the problems is that Plaxo has an all-encompassing 'Address' field, yet Outlook/OE uses 'Address' to mean street address, with separate fields for City, State/Province, Postal Code, and Country.
