View Full Version : Deleted contacts get recreated by Toolbar for TB
October 17th, 2005, 12:13 AM
Hi there,
I'm not sure if somebody from Plaxo is reading here currently, but I found another bug:
I deleted a few contacts in Outlook, after a sync the contacts are deleted at Plaxo online aswell. When I start Thunderbird at home now, the Plaxo extension will NOT delete these contacts in Thunderbird, the extension recreates these contacts at Plaxo online instead.
When I'm back at work the contacts are also created in Outlook again. So it seems like it is not possible to delete contacts at all. I haven't tried it the otherway around (to delete the contacts in Thunderbird first), but I will do this and report.
Can anybody else confirm this problem?
Kind Regards,
Jürgen

Hi JonDiver, glad I'm not alone :-)
Well, I tried to delete the contacts in Plaxo online and Thunderbird now:
1. Delete contacts in Plaxo Online
When I delete the contacts in "Plaxo Online" and start Outlook afterwards the contacts get deleted there. If I start Thunderbird afterwards the contacts get recreated in "Plaxo Online" and finally in Outlook.
2. Delete contacts in Thunderbird.
Well, deleting contacts in Thunderbird helps. After a sync the contacts get deleted in "Plaxo Online" as well. When I start Outlook now the contacts are also deleted there!
So the only possibility to delete contacts is to do it in Thunderbird. I knew it already for a long time: Thunderbird rules! /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Well, but a solution would be really nice, maybe in the next version?
Cheers,
Jürgen

I'll have our QA department confirm and file a bug to fix.
Thanks,

I have also seen this. I always thought it was related to the single quotation bug. TB crashes on sync and then the slow sync always brings back the deleted entries.

Has this been fixed yet before I go and synch to my new TB on Mac? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

And here I thought I was the only one.
The problem seems to be related to the creation dates of the entries in the Thunderbird address book. I have two computers running Outlook, and two running Thunderbird. When the Thunderbird (1.5/Plaxo 1.6.4) computers sync, all their contacts are added to the online list rather than deferring to the versions already there, creating many duplicates. Then the duplicated contacts propagate to the Outlook machines.
However, once the duplicates are removed from the online version, they delete from the Outlook machines, but not the Thunderbird machines.
More info as I get it...
Still a happy Plaxonian,
jj

Oh, one more symptom: If I delete all the addresses in Thunderbird in order to download the online list and start fresh, all the addresses deleted in TB are deleted from the online list instead. Perhaps there should be an "overwrite" option instead of "Sync"? Or maybe there is, and I'm an idjit!

First: Plaxo seems to be very useful and nice tool for handling contacts, thank you guys who made this!
But:
There seems to be no way to handle "unlinked" contacts (contacts that are in Plaxo or in Thunderbird, but not in both) like in Outlook version. I think this is the reason for recreation of deleted contacts?
This also makes Plaxo quite worthless when using Thunderbird in 2 computers: if you delete an old contact in your work PC, it gets recreated when synchronizing with your home PC.
Is there any update coming?

Does anybody know how Thunderbird handles contact deletions? Does the addressbook keep a deletion stub?
Does Plaxo modify Thunderbird's default deletion behavior? Basically, with Plaxo installed does Thunderbird save a deletion stub of deleted contacts?
If not, why not? This would definitely eliminate the resurected delete issue.
