View Full Version : Change primary email address to personal
December 2nd, 2005, 09:12 AM
For most of my contacts I got their personal and business email address. But often they're just friends.
What annoys me is that Plaxo always prefers and links primarily to the business address - but i don't want my friends business email to be the default one.
Vice versa if I have entered both addresses into my card the primary email for my friends to contact me is the business email - this doesn't make sense.
I really would like an option that makes Plaxo focus on the personal information.
A solution to this might be an option to categorise contacts as friend or business - or to extend the option "preferred address" to cover email addresses as well.
Any chance that this will be implented in the future?
Thanks!
Regards
Michael

I'm assuming you are referring to how Outlook maintains and Email1, Email2 and Email3.
If your friends are also Plaxo members, it may be that they have only granted you access to the Business information and not their personal information. Plaxo will update their matching entries in your address book based on what permission they have granted you access to. If they have only granted you access to their Work info, Plaxo will make this their Email1 field and move the existing Email1 field to Email2.
If they were to grant you access to both their personal and work info, Plaxo will update you with both of their card information, and leave the existing Email1 alone (assuming this was one the personal card)
There may be a number of things we may do to provide greater flexibility, but in the mean time, you may wish to turn OFF automatic updates. This will allow you to review changes prior them them being made in your local address book. You can then approve changes made to your address book on a field by field basis.
See your Plaxo / Preferences to change your automatic updates setting.

Hello, I signed up for Plaxo a couple days ago and have been entering my address book info and experimenting with a few of the features.
While experimenting with the update feature I ran into the same problem as Mizo and consider it to be a serious issue that hampers me when sending out update requests. Reading the response to his question I think there's a misunderstanding somewhere. I'll try to elaborate. (Make the assumption that a)I'm working with a non-plaxo member contact and b) I'm not concerned with syncing with Outlook ATM)
There needs to be a way to specify which field is the primary email field on Plaxo Online. Currently it ALWAYS treats Email Field 1 on the business information tab as the primary email. So if I enter "friend@work.com" in Email 1 on the business tab and "friend@home.com" in Email 1 in the personal tab, Plaxo Online will send my update request to "friend@work.com". What I need is the ability to set
whichever address I want as the one Plaxo uses to correspond with. As Mizo suggest a check box next to each address box(or at least Email 1 on both tabs) would solve the problem. It would be beneficial to add this checkbox option on the update request email so my friend/business acquaintance/etc could specify where he'd want my emails to go(Currently if the person adds a business email it becomes the primary email).

Marc - Correct, Plaxo Online currently only allows you to send to send an update request the first email address for a particular contact. This is a known issue, that we hope to fix soon.
In the meantime, as a workaround you can send an update request to a particular email address by using the Quick Connect feature available on the My Plaxo page. Simply specify the email address you wish to send an update request to.

I'd like to add one more request related to this one:
Please allow specifying which details are the 'main' details, as currently I see a lot of my contacts as "no company, no address, no phone, etc." because they are personal contacts and have only "Home" details filled in.
Thanks!
