View Full Version : Feature Request: Outlook Categories

Outlook sorts my Plaxo cards by category and that works fine like Family, Friends, Vendors, etc..

In outlook we can get pretty advanced with the categorization. We can add more than one category and create lists and sort by them. For personal or business this is an excellent feature and excellent when sending mail. In plaxo online, there is no advanced features for categories. It would be nice to be able to at least sort by them, etc.. it would be cooler if it was totally integrated like you could filter by categories in order to update contacts! There are categories in outlook, yahoo, aol, etc and lots of the systems plaxo already integrates with. It would be nice to see this go to the next level. It would truly make plaxo a superior program. It already ties all of my other devices together. If categories were more advanced, I would no longer need my access database.

What the heck, I'll jump in on this again.

If enough users request this feature, maybe Plaxo will prioritize their development accordingly. I know there are plenty of requests, but hopefully they pick the ones that are most in demand and are consistent with Plaxo's core features - Outlook synchronization being a primary core feature. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Please count me in for categories!

I work with Plaxo in two situations.

Personal: I use Palm Contacts and sync wtih Plaxo Online throught Outlook. I have about 1,000 contacts and 10 categories. I have cetegories like: friends & family, business, and inactive. (I don't use Outlook for anything but the sync between the Palm and Plaxo.)

Business: Our fine arts gallery uses Apple's Address Book and AOL Mail. Plaxo Online provides the "sync glue". We have about 1,000 contacts and 30 categories and growing. We have categories for customer, vendor, and specialized mailing lists such as "signed guest book at January exhibit". The new AOL web mail (beta 2) lets us mail to a category.

Since Plaxo Online has category pick list or drag and drop assignment to categories, we assign and remove categories on the Palm and the Apple Address Book respectively.

Our primary use of categories is to carefully specify recipients for email, snail mails, or follow up calls based on our relationship to them.

Here is one scenario that we use all the time.
<ul type="square">
As contacts are added to the address book, assign the "came to show" category.
Later, create a category "follow up".
Now display the contacts that are in the "came to show" category.
For each desired follow up contact, add the category "follow up".
[/list]
Follow-up questions welcome.

Sincerely,

Bob
