View Full Version : BUG?: First/last name order
February 26th, 2006, 04:11 PM
I'm seeing a lot of contacts come down as last name/first name in the list of names on the left, but is shown the other way round in the detailed record area.
When you select 'Swap first/last name order' from the Address Book menu, the name stays the same (i.e. last name, first name) but moves in the sort order.
Click again, and the name goes back to first name, last name.
These contacts seem to be confined to ones that I have edited online after syncing up from the Address Book. Edits can be manually changing a single line or receiving an update from the other person.
Whenever this happens, I end up with two records, one with a nice Plaxo icon in Address Book but no picture, and the other with no icon but with Picture.

Hi Mat,
Do you do the sync first and then the editing online. I am having troubles seen this behavior. Can you try it again?
Thanks!

I sync'd for the first time and ran into the same issue. Some names are listed First/Last and others Last/First in the left window. However, in the detail window they are all First/Last.
BTW, thanks for getting the MAC release out! What a life saver.

yes, the beta indeed has issue with handling last name and first name.
my current address book list LAST name then FIRST name.
if u look carefully in plaxo, there is only one NAME field. i'm surprised because vCard should have LAST name and FIRST name by default.
i suspect the problem is, during the sync, the plaxo program is trying to act smart by taking the last word in the LAST name field and use is as the last name. for instance, let's say you have
LAST: Patrick Chan FIRST:Pak Keong
and displayed as "Patrick Chan Pak Keong"
Plaxo will convert it into "Chan, Pak Keong Patrick"
i think plaxo should consider splitting the NAME field into the standart LAST and FIRST name fields.
if not splitting, just take the DISPLAYED name without converting. don't act smart by guessing which is the last name because plaxo currently cannot handle a LAST name field which has more than one word
finally there's one more issue - the contacts in plaxo online, whether in names, cards, or grid format, names that are too long are not being displayed fully even though i'm using wide screen resolution. plaxo website should detect our screen resolution and display the right amount of information accordingly

When I synced to Plaxo Online with Plaxo for Mac it began deleting my contacts, first, taking away the last name on the first sync, then deleting it on any subsequent sync. I can assume this is related to the First Name/Last Name bug, because my contacts are listed by First Name/Last Name, not the default Last Name, First Name that Plaxo Online uses (and could we customize that, please?).

I am experiencing this same issue.
Before using Plaxo on the Mac, I had already set up a Plaxo online account, and had synced with my Outlook contacts on a Windows XP machine (at work).
At home, I have an Intel Mac mini, running Mac OS X 10.4.5. My Address Book started out empty, other than the entries Apple puts in (the Apple Computer card and the card for my user). I downloaded Plaxo for Mac v1.0b2 build 154 and installed it. I then started Address Book and logged in to Plaxo. Plaxo performed an initial synchronization, and downloaded all 165 contacts.
Address Book is set up to display First Name Last Name, and sort by First Name. However, I noticed immediately that in the "Name" column (in between the "Group" column and the contact card display column) was not displaying some of the names with the First Name and Last name in the proper order. For example, I have one contact with a first name "Amy" and a last name "Walton". The name is displayed correctly on the right side of the window, but in the "Name" column it shows up as "Walton Amy". However, the contact does appear in the proper place in the list according to alphabetical ordering.
The one thing in common with all of the flipped names is that they were marked with Plaxo icons (indicating either that an update request had been sent, that the contact was up to date, or that they were Plaxo members). All of the contacts WITHOUT a Plaxo status icon had their names in the proper order.
I'm looking forward to a fix for this problem!
Edit: Added 'at home' and 'at work' to clarify above.

We're looking into this issue. Sorry for the inconvenience it's caused but we'll definitely have this buttoned down before we release Plaxo for Mac 1.0 - I promise. /images/graemlins/grin.gif
