Syncing

Perhaps I do not understand something about syncing. I have a PowerBook and an eMac. I’ve signed up for basic Plaxo.

So, my understanding was that any changes made on either machine’s Address Book or on the Plaxo site, should be carried over during sync. But this is not happening.

I made some changes online (contact up dates and a few deletions) but these were not carried over to my Address Book on either Mac. As a matter of fact when I try to sync my eMac, I get a popup window for a split second and no sync is completed. (The software firewall is off, does Plaxo need a specific port open on a router?). On the PowerBook, I actually get to see the dialog box, which explains that a sync is in progress. However, no changes are carried over.

I’ve also tried making changes on the PowerBook, but they do not carry over to my online contacts or the eMac.

Any advice would be welcome. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers!

Your setup sounds great - just such a case where Plaxo for Mac can be a real value - in keeping your contacts up-to-date between multiple computers and also online.

A couple of things to note for forum readers. Plaxo for Mac normally synchronizes several times an hour as long as you are logged into your account and your Mac is not asleep. You can also force Plaxo for Mac to sync any outstanding changes using the Sync Now command. I just mention these things because I know some people like to hop on and off their computer throughout the day, signing in and out of their Mac account all the while. Using your account this way very possibly will not give Plaxo for Mac the opportunity to exchange all the necessary info to complete a sync.

All this aside, there is a communication problem between the Plaxo servers and the current version of Plaxo for Mac. Right now, if you have any changes that come down from the Plaxo server that attempts to delete a contact in your local address book, Plaxo for Mac will almost certainly sit and spin with the Sync progress window spinning. At this point, you need to quit Plaxo for Mac (and Address Book) and relaunch the pair to get some functionality back.

This problem has been resolved in our upcoming update to Plaxo for Mac which hopefully will be making its appearance within a weeks time.

In the meantime, I would recommend that you do all of your contact deletions on your Mac, let it sync with Plaxo Online so that your Address Book is pretty much cleaned up and up-to-date, then add your second Mac to the mix with an empty Address Book and a fresh install of Plaxo for Mac. When it completes the initial sync with Plaxo Online, all of your contacts should be sync'ed across the three venues. Note that changes and additions to your address book do not cause the problem mentioned above, just delete requests. You should be in good shape until the new version of Plaxo for Mac is released in a few more days. Let us know how it goes for you at beta-mac@plaxo.com

Just a heads up to forum readers. This problem was fixed last night with an update to our servers so if you still have sync problems as of today please let us know at our beta feedback email. We still have an update coming out for Plaxo for Mac very soon that fixes several other issues - so look for it in the next couple of days.
