View Full Version : 2 Computers, Plaxo AND .Mac

April 10th, 2006, 01:51 PM
I have an iMac G5 on my desk, a MacBook Pro that goes with me most days and I've been using .Mac to keep my calendar, address book, bookmarks, etc. synchronized. I used Plaxo before I made the switch to Macintosh in December. I just tried using Plaxo (on both computers) and I'm wondering if Plaxo and .Mac are dueling with each other in a never-ending cycle? The syncs never seem to fully settle down (and I'm wondering if part of that is the "Company" flag that Plaxo does not support but .Mac does).

I need .Mac and I need my contacts to be on .Mac so that's high priority. Should I or should I not have Plaxo installed on both computers? I'm thinking maybe not.

Is anybody using both Plaxo and .Mac at the same time? What is your configuration and how is it working for you?

What I'd really like is for Plaxo to license/integrate their system with Apple for .Mac.

Thanks,
Chip

BTW, here is an example of the errors I receive in my Console:

There are hundreds of these in my addressbook. Unfortunately, I can't tell if these errors are coming from a .Mac Sync or a Plaxo Sync.

I have about 746 contacts in my address book.

Chip

Hi Chip,
can you tell what are you doing on each computer when this happens?
is 1 computer running Address book with plaxo installed?
is the other computer syncing the address book with the .mac account manually.
Also from where did you get the logs you posted. from the ~/Library/Logs/Sync
or from ~/Library/Logs/Plaxo?
is the same email address for both accounts .mac and plaxo being sync?
Thanks!
Ana

Wow, what a delay. I completely missed the response and I can't believe I've been living with this problem for a year and a third. Apparently, even my forum account got deleted. Let's see if I can respond to these questions:

> can you tell what are you doing on each computer when this happens?

Generally nothing or nothing directly related. I have both computer's set to automatically sync to .Mac and I have the iMac set to automatically sync to Plaxo and the MacBook Pro to sync manually to Plaxo (though I never trigger it -- I depend on .Mac to sync the MacBook to the iMac which is synced to Plaxo and also the Blackberry).

Note: I just switched to an iPhone and dropped PocketMac for Blackberry; however, the problem has persisted. I can just return to the computer and find the warning dialog box saying it's about to change greater that 5% of the calendar. Once, I click change on one computer, the next .Mac sync will cause it to happen on the other, ad infinitum.

> is 1 computer running Address book with plaxo installed?

Both are running Address Book and both have Plaxo installed though as I said above the MBP never initiates a sync. The iMac was set (until yesterday) to sync automatically with Plaxo.

> is the other computer syncing the address book with the .mac account manually.

No, the MBP is syncing to .Mac automatically -- I need this for my calendar and my iDisk.

> Also from where did you get the logs you posted. from the ~/Library/Logs/Sync
or from ~/Library/Logs/Plaxo?

From the Console window.

>is the same email address for both accounts .mac and plaxo being sync?

Are you asking, am I logging into Plaxo with the same email address as the userid? The answer is yes.

UPDATE: Since yesterday, I now have both computers set to sync manually to Plaxo and have yet to do a sync to Plaxo and the computers have stopped dueling with each -- for the last year, they have been constantly re-syncing their calendars, back and forth. Also, every once in a while, I lose my whole address book and have to recover it from somewhere, but that is rare though it did happen this past week.

At some point, I'll have to sync to Plaxo again but I'm wondering what I will unleash when I do. At this point, my Plaxo address book is empty as is my calendar. Something obviously went wrong last week.

Wow, I'm really out of date. My Configure pane says I'm running Plaxo for Mac 1.0 (build 167), I think. I have automatically check for updates on startup checked and when I click on "Check Now" it says I'm running the latest version, yet apparently, 3.0 (build 378) is the latest version!

Urg.

FYI, I finally got the latest build installed on my iMac and I've uninstalled Plaxo from my MacBook Pro. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Chip,

Sorry to hear about the long standing problem you've been dealing with. A couple of comments:

1) You had mentioned that during this past year you'd see your calendars triggering data change alerts ping pong-ing between your iMac and MacBookPro. Did you mean Contacts, since Plaxo for Mac 1.0 only acted on your Address Book contacts. If you were having Conflicts with your iCal, then there is something else at play rather than Plaxo. Of course, Plaxo for Mac 3.0 does support calendar sync so if you've upgraded both your Mac's to the new (beta) version then you will need to include Plaxo for Mac in that equation.

2) You were wondering why Plaxo for Mac did not alert you to Plaxo for Mac 3.0 (build 378) presence. Plaxo 3.0 for Mac is currently in late beta (public) testing. Once we're satisfied with it's level of quality, it will be the default version for anyone downloading the Mac software (and at that time, Plaxo for Mac 1.0 will be able to detect the new version for download)

3) Regarding having .Mac and Plaxo for Mac setup and active at the same time, we do have an FAQ on the subject:

http://support2.plaxo.com/al/12/1/article.asp?aid=1341&n=15&tab=search&bt=4n&r=0.4425563&s=1

Hopefully this URL will work, but if not search our help section online for .Mac and Mac.

I have to tell you that at this time I can't remember. I just got used to seeing the messages and clicking on OK (or whatever the button said) whenever it popped up. My first post in this thread seems to indicate it may have been the contacts.

I assume there were other releases between 1.0 and 3.0, why didn't it tell me that anything was available?

Actually, there was no Plaxo for Mac 2.0 release. As our Mac client has been playing catch up with our PC offering, when we moved to 3.0 for all of Plaxo, the Mac software came along.
