I can not find an explanation of what this new Plaxo for Mac is supposed to do. Will it synch with iCal? Will it permit me to import files (either Palm or vCal format) from Palm Desktop? I would really love to have that last option!

Plaxo for Mac is one of many Plaxo clients developed by Plaxo. As you can see from the other forums, we provide Plaxo clients for a number of other applications.
Each client provides the same basic functionality: bi-directionally synchronization of your local address book with your Plaxo Addressbook maintained within the Plaxo service.
Why is this a good thing, you might ask??? Well there are many benefits to using Plaxo.
- Plaxo can automatically update entries within your Plaxo Addressbook. As these entries are updated, the Plaxo client automatically syncs these changes to your local address book, which is generally where you want to have your latest and greatest information.
- Since your local information is always being sync'd with your Plaxo Addressbook, you essentially always have an updated/automated backup of your information. If you ever lose your Macbook, you can quickly restore your AB information.
- Your Plaxo Addressbook is available through our web-based Plaxo Online. This means you don't have to be at your desk in order to get that person's phone number you forgot.
- You can synchronize your AB information across multiple applications, OS's, and services. For example, you might have both a Mac and PC. Using Plaxo for Mac on your Mac and Plaxo for Outlook on your PC, you can a single address book sync'd between the two applications. The same can be done for Yahoo!, AIM, Thunderbird, and Plaxo enabled applications and services.
Of course, once you're a Plaxo member, you can also take advantage of our other Plaxo features such as Plaxo eCards, Deduper, Plaxo Mobile, Plaxo Online, etc...

How often is my local address book synced with my online plaxo address book ? When I change something in my local address book, it seems to me I have to select the plaxo "Sync Now" command in the menu bar for the change to be reflected in the online address book. Unless I have to wait a for specific duration, but then how long ?
I am using plaxo to sync address books between my two computers and apart from this unknown time lapse between changes in my local and online address books, it works like a charm.

Plaxo for Mac is currently set to sync automatically once every ten minutes though this may change in the future. It certainly is possible to pop in and out of your Mac user account to inhibit Plaxo for Mac's automatic sync routine - but in practice this is not a problem.
There is no downside to using the Sync Now command other than you're putting more effort/thought into managing your contacts than you probably need to.
