View Full Version : What is the log file telling me?

The following is the output from a manual sync. I have my default set to manual sync given prior performance issues and the size of the address book.
When the sync finished the icon displayed in the toolbar has a triangle with an ! in the center. Hence I sense a warning or error being indicated. You can not click on the icon to get any further info so I went to the log file. See below.
If anyone cares to tell me what the log file is trying to say that would be great. My read is there was a network error with the sync. There was no network outage or other issue impacting other applications on the net.

There are a couple of things going on here. I think the root of the problem was that our server stopped responding to your sync request for some reason - hence an error for Plaxo for Mac but not for your web apps in general. It would be useful to know if this happens frequently to you or if this was a rare case.
The little triangle in the Plaxo menu item does denote that there is 'some' problem - given that there are so few options to check/change in the software, it usually is just a matter of ensuring that a) your user account info is valid. b) you have a good network connection. c) you have a valid contacts folder set as your target. d) you have no more than 10,000 contacts in your address book.
All this aside, in a future version of Plaxo for Mac we are working to provide more status/error feedback than just the error icon in the Plaxo menu item.

An update.
I had guessed that the timeout might have been a temporary thing. As I had seen the triangle 2 for 2 I was not completely convinced.
I ran the sync again and it appear to have run to completion. No triangle this time.
I have the sync set to manual given the past issues with it running for hours. I have not switched to automatic yet.
I started the sync again today. I thought I started it pretty early but I am not sure. What I do know is it is still running. The log implies it has been running for 4 hours.
I will past the log fine in a separate reply.
I take it from the last line there is a limit of 10,000 entries. This will quickly be an issue once I get things cleaned up as I wanted to merge in my Daylite contacts. I was going to clean the address book with Plaxo, merge the data from Daylite into the address book and then fire off a sync to deal with possible duplicates. Pushing the edges am I?

To follow up the sync was still running the next morning. I figured that it was never going to end so I stopped the process (selected quit). I have a copy of the log file it is matters. Nothing much was reported past what you could see in the log info I posted 12 or so hours ago.

c) you have a valid contacts folder set as your target. item.
I believe I do but can you clarify what you mean by this?

In short, when you set up a new Plaxo account, a default "Contacts" folder is created in your account. At any point after your account is created, it is possible to customize the storage of your contacts by adding/renaming/deleting your contact storage folders.
In at least a few cases, we've had Plaxo for Mac users run into problems because there was no valid folder for storing contacts in their Plaxo Online account (even though Plaxo for Mac may show Contacts as the selected destination)

I believe I have things configured correctly and I am using the default Contacts folder. Unless I have this wrong that is not a factor in the sync performance.
The last sync ended with an error (triangle on the icon). The log file does not show much past last night. The sync was running for over 10 hours when I last checked. I do not see a time stamp for when the sync stopped.
I am going to try another sync and see if the log tells me anything different.
