At a minimum: Have it off and a user option to turn it on, If you use it for any good reason.

As a programmer: Why slow the system down with information that's not seen?

My First time here: Some other observations.
As a LAN Administrator: Not too happy about the ping/tcp traffic. I wonder if could convince the adware people that a un-wanted ping can be regarded as ad/spy-ware? It's release of information, that can be illegal, but am sure you folks buried it in the EULA somewhere. It's un-neccessary, especially when your doing updates. Is this how I qualify for extra e-mails to upgrade your product?

My recommandation is to conditionally build the product without it.

Pone,

Thanks for the comments and concerns.

As for the plaxo.log output, we've done it as a precautionary measure. Often times, sync problems can be difficult to recreate. So with the additional logging, if there is ever a question of what has occurred, the log file is already available. The amount of logging is minimal (there is an option to turn on even more logging) and the additional load on the system is very small.

As for the ping traffic, this is a necessary function of the toolbar software as this is the check performed by the software to determine if there are any new updates that need to be sync'd locally. Once again, the network traffic associated with this ping should be very small. If the ping determines an update is necessary, a second/heavier connection is made to download the new information.
