It's been a long time since we've seen any update. Is this a dead product?
Things I'd like to see:
Address Book supports a lot more fields than Plaxo does (multiple IM names, etc). It would be great if Plaxo could address that.
Address Book stores photos for people. Are they uploaded to my Plaxo account, and if not, why not? It would sure be great to use Plaxo to replicate that on other machines (Mac or Windows) or be able to see it on-line without having to set it up all over again.

Anything but dead - actually we are closing in beginning beta testing of our next version of Plaxo for Mac which will be expanding its capabilities in new areas. I still don't have a date the throw out as a general availability time, but we do hope to include a number of list members in the beta programs should you choose to take the opportunity.

While Plaxo doesn't currently enable you to customize your friend's, family/associate's photos, this is something that we're working to address. But I don't think we have anything to solve this problem in the near term.
Regardiing Address Book field sync, enhancing Plaxo for Mac's syncing capability is high on the list of issues we want to address. We done some significant upgrades to our sync plumbing to be able to support this so we're hopeful in being able to deliver on improved sync in an upcoming release of Plaxo for Mac.
But, regarding multiple IM names in Plaxo for Mac 1.0, both Plaxo for Mac and Plaxo Online do support multiple IM names for a given service. In Plaxo for Mac, you can have (I believe) three different 'home' and three different 'work' IM addresses for each of the available services. You can enter them on Plaxo Online in the Personal or Business "Other IM" field as comma seperated values (but noting the service name in parentheses after the IM address - e.g. myAiMAddress (AIM), myYahooAddress (Yahoo), myOtherAIMAddress (AIM)
Plaxo for Mac will correctly break these out into seperate fields for use in the Apple Address Book and can combine like labelled IM addresses to sync to the Plaxo server.
So, hang in there a little longer..Some good stuff is coming up soon.

I'm unclear how it works now. If my contact has saved their own photo in Plaxo will that come down to my address book? If I've saved a photo in the address book, will that upload to Plaxo?

I'm glad you asked!
If your contact is a Plaxo member and has at least one of their card photos set (and available to you via permissions), then the Plaxo dock in Address Book will sync it/them and display them.
If you had not customized your contact's photo within Addresss Book prior to synching with Plaxo for Mac, then the photos downloaded will also be used wherever Apple utilizes a contact's personal photo (iChat, Mail, and Address Book are the most used one's that I can think of - but there are plenty of other third party apps that take advantage of the photo, too).
If, however, you had set a custom photo for a contact prior to syching with Plaxo for Mac, we will not overwrite your custom photo. The Plaxo card photos will only be used within the Plaxo for Mac interface. You cannot alter your Plaxo contacts' photos at this time.
Does this help?

We will be making an announcement here very soon. We are still in beta...there are still bugs to be worked out...but if you would like to see what we've been working on and would like a chance to offer some feedback/input, the wait is almost over.

I'm cross posting a note from our engineering vp that was posted yesterday to the Plaxo Yahoo group. You all might be interested in this:
========================
Hey there Plaxo users!
We've been hinting for months now about an all-new and improved version of Plaxo Online (called "Plaxo 3.0"...very creative, huh?). And, we are almost ready to go prime-time, but first we need help testing it on our most daring, helpful, and dedicated users (before unleashing it on everyone else).
So, if you are a passionate user of Plaxo and an "early adopter" of new technology, you can volunteer for the private beta. The first 1,000 people who send an empty e-mail privatebeta@plaxo.com will be given instructions on how to get started in a couple of weeks.
[Note: we will not read or reply to the emails sent to privatebeta@plaxo.com.]
What’s included?
- A completely new version of Plaxo Online
- Expanded list of "sync points" (including Google, Yahoo!, and Hotmail)
- An innovative new online calendar
- A few other surprises
================
So, send in your requests if you're interested (and a bit daring).

Hi all,
I found the plaxo forums today, and I am afraid that I just missed the cutoff. :( I just wanted to check and see if the first 1,000 users have already started beta testing Plaxo 3.0. I am keeping my fingers crossed, and keep checking my inbox to see if i've received the magical e-mail that allows me to access the next version. But I am starting to think that I am too late. Can anyone say whether they've received the e-mail to get started? The anticipation is killing me!
