I remember a few years back when I first heard of plaxo I thought that it was a cool concept. Having heard that it had made some big changes, I came back and signed up for a 30-day trial. I was most interested in the update to contact info service. My experience thus far has been rather bad. I installed plaxo on my work PC with Windows XP sp2 and Outlook 2007. These are all the latest versions of their respective products with all updates applied. On this computer I get an error that just basically says to call support. So thinking no problem I call them, spend 40 minutes letting a tech drive, and still no resolution. Sometimes it says it can't connect to the server- but pings, tracert, and direct telnet connections work so that error appears to be incorrect.
So thinking that perhaps it was an issue with that PC, I tried installing it at home- which is connected to the same exchange server so would be nearly as effective. I get the same error at home - except this time with Outlook 2003. After giving me the error, it starts to say it is trying to synch but seems to hang there. At this point, I wonder about this product as I feel like it should have worked one of the 2 fresh installs I have had, if not both.

While the tech was friendly, which I really do appreciate, having to wait until Monday to have my outlook 2007 machine- the first machine I really wanted to get it on- is a little bit of a let down.

I see another topic on this board with many many people saying they have the same issue. I would like to see an official response as to what this issue is. Plaxo, being open with your customers is one of the cornerstones of a good software company as opposed to just another product. I appreciate that software is difficult to troubleshoot especially given the numbers of different environments out there but we, as your customers, deserve the same loyalty and trust we have placed in you to provide such an important service to us-- both for our personal lives and professional.

We are not aware of any general problem with connecting with the Plaxo servers. However, the Plaxo toolbar does require a good network connection that can stay open for several minutes even if there is no network activity in order to sync. This can be affected by firewalls, IE internet connection settings, even network hardware outside of your desktop machine.

I would recommend continuing to work with customer support, and hopefully they'll be able to help track down what the issue is here.
